Let’s Talk Alterations…
What are alterations?
Wedding dresses are made to order, not custom made. Therefore we order the size closest to your measurements, not exact measurements. Making it fit like a glove is where alterations come in. Alterations are the process of getting your wedding dress custom fitted to you by a professional seamstress once your gown has arrived. At Frankie Jane Couture Bridal alterations are not done in-house and is a separate charge from your wedding gown. We have two recommend seamstress we work closely with, that have their masters in costume design and are familiar with all of our gowns. You are also more than welcome to use a seamstress you know and trust.
Why do I need alterations?
Alterations are an essential part of your wedding dress process. It’s what makes your gown tailored to your body and bridal vision. Like I mentioned in the above paragraph, while we do our best to order your wedding dress in the closest size possible, you’ll most likely need a few adjustments. Typically brides need adjustments such as a hem, bustle, possibly cups installed, or straps taken in. And with every body being different, depending on the size range between your hips, waist, and bust you could need to get it taken in on the bodice or skirt. A professional bridal seamstress is well equipped and qualified to check off every adjustment your wedding dress needs so it fits you perfectly on your big day.
When do I start alterations?
Alterations being after you pick up your wedding dress from our store. Depending on the alterations you need done to your gown will vary the time the seamstress will need. Most brides need 2-3 fittings with the seamstress, so we recommend giving yourself 1-3 months for alterations. The last thing you want is to have to pay a rush fee with the seamstress so make sure you plan ahead. We recommended shopping for your wedding dress a year to nine months before your wedding that way you have plenty of time for it to arrive, alterations, and any pre wedding day photos you may be taking.
What do I bring to my alterations appointment?
First and foremost your wedding dress (I know that’s obvious but feel like it needed to be said). SHOES! The seamstress will hem your gown according the the shoes you wear on your wedding, so it’s important to take them to your seamstress appointment. If you don’t have the exact shoe yet at least take a shoe with the same heel height. Finally any shape wear or undergarments you plan on wearing on your big day should be brought to your appointment as well.
